2011 Schools Programme

For 2011, we have expanded our commitment to our Schools Programme. With the assistance of our sponsors, we are proud to present a new programme with three streams:

•   EXPERIENCE Venue-based free workshops in support of NZ Ministry of Education curriculum
•   ENGAGE Arts experience programme combining venue-based and school-based learning
•   ACCESS School access to space, performances and events at student rates

To view the programme online click here and to download the PDF version click here. For updates, registration and more information on our year long programme, email schools@pacific.org.nz or call (09) 985 2392.

For a complete event listing and dates, please refer to the Events Calendar of the programme.

Experience

Students participate in authentic learning experiences in a professional performing arts environment that cannot be replicated in the classroom. Arts based programmes are offered to year 1-13 students and are in line with the NZ Ministry of Education’s Learning Education Outside the Classroom (LEOTC) program to compliment and enrich school based learning.

All programmes in the Experience Stream are free of charge.

Programmes

Dancing with Mythology
Dancing with Mythology is interactive storytelling through a series of short dance and drama workshops. It teaches Pacific legends and histories of migration to Aotearoa based on the majestic carving Pou Kapua.

School Production Programme
The School Production Programme is a unique opportunity for six (6) schools to hold their Year 12/13 production at the Genesis Energy Theatre and be mentored by a professional technical team --- Free of Charge! To take part in this exciting opportunity, schools must meet guidelines and send in their application/expression of interest before the end of term 1, 2011. Click here to download the Application Form.

Set the Scene
Students will explore the inner workings of the theatre on a backstage tour. They will then join the in-house lighting technician who will discuss and demonstrate how lighting is used to create effect.

Dance and Drama Masterclasses
Masterclasses will be offered to serious and committed senior students of Dance and Drama. Professional Practitioners and Educators will facilitate workshops in each of the disciplines.

Engage

Project Light Bulb
Project Light Bulb is the main Engage Stream programme. It is a long term arts residency programme working in selected schools for up to two terms in 2011 with the aim of enhancing and enriching arts learning.

The project consists of groups of artists from different fields visiting the schools and working with students and teachers.  The artists involved will be experienced musicians, TV/film actors, directors, dancers, choreographers, composers, writers, designers or video artists. Together with the participants, they will create a performance piece, build their confidence, and develop their skills and understanding of the creative process. The programme will culminate in one event featuring the performance pieces within the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre.

The programme is developed and headed by Sally Markham, Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to the Arts, with 40 years’ experience in arts education.

Schools may express interest in taking part of Project Light Bulb by emailing sallymarkham@xtra.co.nz

Access

TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre is host to excellent live performances, drama and theatre, musical, orchestras and concerts all year round.  With the support of the Schools Programme Sponsors, the Access Stream provides a great opportunity for schools to avail tickets to these events at a discounted student or concession rate.

Through the Access Stream, schools also have greater access to the venue for their own events at a discounted rate. Whether it is an end of year awards or a school production, TelstraClear Pacific will sponsor 50% of venue hire cost.

In addition, we also accommodate schools in need of a venue at short notice (within  2 weeks). Groups may book a venue for a rehearsal or even for a class outside the classroom; if the space is available, it’s free of charge!

Students can likewise enjoy free venue tours that highlight how architecture can reflect theme while enjoying our public art collection including the Lion Foundation Hall of Champions (Graffiti Art Wall).
