Feather, Frond, Fern

The Matiatia Frond is a major sculpture conceived to be suspended overhead.
Traditionally the fern frond is a symbol of peace and of welcome. Matiatia Frond, references themes of frond, feather and fishbone, acknowledging the elements of land, air and sea.
The form alludes to the structure of vessels, with keel and ribs enhanced with layers of red acrylic pigment, referencing the colour of life.
Both the upturned hull form and the layering of fronds are associated with shelter and nuturing.
The work was designed for the inaugural Sculpture of the Gulf exhibition on Waiheke Island in January 2003, where it was suspended above a valley along the southern headland of Matiatia Bay.
The sculpture won the Peoples Choice Award.
